Cover Reveal! Speed by BB Easton

SPEED EXCERPT When I woke up on my sixteenth birthday, I didn’t leap out of bed to go get my driver’s license. I wasn’t thinking about the appointment I had to buy my first car that afternoon—a car that I’d been saving for since the day I turned fifteen and was legally able to work. I didn’t give two shits about going to the mall, or opening presents, or eating a fucking piece of fucking cake. All I wanted for my birthday was to sleep through it, because whenever I was awake, so was my gnawing, soul-crushing pain. I could feel it chewing through the lining of my stomach, devouring my once bubbly personality, sucking the energy from my bones like marrow, swallowing my will to live. Being eaten alive hurt. Being awake hurt. Being asleep didn’t. I reluctantly opened my eyes and glanced over at the nightstand. The red numbers on the clock announced that I’d slept past noon again. The blueberry muffin sitting next to it with a candle shoved haphazardly in the top told me that my mom must have come in and tried to wake me up. My wide-open blinds—which were letting in an obscene amount of summer sun—let me know that she’d tried more than once. And that little white pill and glass of water on my nightstand? Well those only pissed me off. I sat up and squinted at the assorted bullshit on the table until I spotted my pack of Camel Lights. Swinging my spindly legs over the edge of the mattress, I reached past the food and water, opting for poison instead. I lit a cigarette and waited for that comforting, calming first inhalation to do its thing, but even smoking had become joyless. Just like everything else, I was going through the motions. Hand to mouth. Inhale. Exhale. Repeat. I ashed my cigarette in an empty Altoids tin on the nightstand and stared at the pill my mother had left for me—the tiny white hope that had turned out to be just another disappointment. I picked it up and inspected it. If it hadn't had the word PROZAC stamped on the side of it I would have assumed they’d just been giving me Tic Tacs. That shit did nothing. Nothing but mute the vibrant colors of my world to a dirty, dull gray. Instead of my feelings being a violent riot of bitter, angry crimsons, churning, crashing ceruleans, and blinking, cautionary yellows, my inner world was now as gray as the cloud of smoke that hung four feet above the floor and three feet below the ceiling in my bedroom. As gray as my skin, where it draped between my ribs and puddled in the hollows of my cheeks and eye sockets. As gray as the fading knight tattoo on the inside of my wedding ring finger. I threw the glorified breath mint across the room and listened to the plink, plink, plink sound it made as it bounced off the wall, onto my “desk”—which was just two filing cabinets and an old door that my mom had scrounged up at Goodwill and spray painted black—and landed in a heap of shiny army-green nylon on the floor. My chest felt as if someone had come up behind me and yanked the laces on an invisible corset. Tears stabbed at the corners of my eyes as images began flashing, unbidden, behind them. Images of a skinhead standing behind me at my locker, sliding an army-green flight jacket up my arms and over my shoulders to warm my perma-chilled skin. Images of his smile when he turned me around to admire the fit. I’d never seen him smile before. Not like that. Making him do it again soon became my reason for getting out of bed every morning. Now what reason did I have? Knight was gone. All I had left was his stupid fucking jacket.

New Review! Burning Bright by Morgan Campbell 5 Cranky Stars

Burning BrightBurning Bright by Morgan Campbell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 engrossing, beautiful Cranky Stars!!!

This is the first book I've read by this author and definitely won't be my last. The way she writes pulls you into the story and make you feel all that the characters feel.

Caitlyn Walker lost the love of her life and her best friend. She wears loss like a second skin. Now widowed and scared she runs home to the safety of her family.

Charlie Stewart has loved Caitlyn nearly all his life. She's the girl next door and every fantasy he's ever had. Even after a six year separation he still pines for her. Will his heart be able to withstand losing her once again?

This story had me on the edge of my seat so much that I couldn't put it down. The suspense and love. Fighting for what your heart wants while fighting for your life. The characters are real and people that I'd love to have in my life, and a few I'd love to kill. Such raw and real emotions we're pulled from me.

After being in a book funk for a bit this author pulled me out with the first chapter and left me begging for more. Morgan Campbell is an author to watch as I'm sure she'll be a best seller in no time. Do yourself a favor and one-click Burning Bright today.

New Review! Flutter by L.A. Corvill 3.5 Cranky Stars

FlutterFlutter by L.A. Corvill
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5 Cranky Stars

I was originally drawn to this book by the cover. It was so beautiful and I had high hopes the story inside would be as well.

Sophia is suffering from a traumatic loss. She conjures up visions of her deceased loved one and all this has her family concerned. With her best friend by her she tries to start anew.

Mathias is the love them and leave them type. He loves himself way too much to settle down. One night Sophia knocks his world upside down.

Ok here's the hard part. I skipped a lot of this book and felt guilty but it was so full of grammatical errors and punctuation errors and heck name spelling errors. It distracted from the good story underneath.

If you can overlook these things then its truly a good story about the stages of grief and how you can go down a dangerous path but it's also about redemption. L.A. Corvill could give us a good story if only it was cleaned up a little more.

New Review! Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepherd 4 Cranky Stars

Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars, #1)Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Cranky Stars

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard is one of the best YA stories that I have read so far in this new year. I admit I binge watched the TV show first before reading the books. Neither one was a disappointment. What I am almost ashamed to admit is that I finished this book in one day.

Each of the main characters got equal time in the story. The dialogue was believable. The only thing I had an issue with that almost took me out of the story was all the high end fashion labels that was name dropped throughout the whole book. Yes, we get it the Liars love their high end stuff.

If you like YA stories packed with mystery, action, and drama then this is the book for you. I would recommend it to those who like this genre.

Excerpt Reveal! Hard Lessons by Charlotte West

Cover Design: Sarah Hansen/Okay Creations
Release Date: August 28, 2017

Down-on-her-luck teacher, Daisy Clemmens, is about to learn some hard lessons. (Not like that, you perv.) Lesson One No matter how broke you are, never agree to a job that includes a rabid eight-year-old, requires a tetanus shot or where your boss is a sexy (and cranky) rock ‘n’ roll god. Lesson Two Do not, do not start to have tender, gooey feelings for the sexy commitment-phobe rock ‘n’ roll god. You'll only get hurt. Lesson Three Okay so you've slept with the sexy rock ‘n’ roll god. But it's not too late. Just whatever you do, don't fall in love. Whoops. Too late. Lesson Four Never love someone, even if they are a sexy rock ‘n’ roll god, more than yourself.

The couch dipped with additional weight, Billy sat next to me. His thigh rubbed against mine. He slung his arms out to rest on the back of the couch. I felt his fingers pluck a lock of my hair and toy with it. “I think we should fuck.”
I choked on air. “Excuse me?”
He shrugged a single shoulder. “Not going to lie, flower, I find you attractive. You kind of dress like an elderly gentleman, and it does things to me.”
I looked down at my sensible skirt and cardigan, insulted and turned on all at once.
Billy shifted closer. His nose skimmed my neck. His breath was warm and smelled like whiskey. Goosebumps broke out along my arms. My stomach flipped. A big hand landed on my thigh, and I could feel the heat from his palm all the way through my wool skirt. “I think we should fuck, just once. Get it out of the way.”
Yes. No. Yes. No. My head waged a silent war with my body. Billy’s hand inched higher and at the same time, his teeth grazed the thin skin of my neck. A tortured sound escaped from low in my throat. “No,” I said weakly. I did not sound convincing. Not at all.
Billy paused his assault. “Is that a question or an answer?”
I pushed myself up from the couch, balling my hands into fists. “No. I’m sorry Mr. Wanks I don’t think this is going to work out. Good luck finding a nanny for your daughter.” I grabbed my bag from the floor, and scooped up the resume Billy had so carelessly tossed aside. It still had some use left in it. Fuck him and fuck this.
I was two feet from the door when Billy’s voice stopped me. “Oi, that’s a relief. The last nanny climbed into bed with me while I was sleeping.” He sauntered towards me. “You passed the final test. You’re really hired now.”
My mouth went dry. I wanted to scream. “Test?” I asked, taking note of the bulge in his pants, the very considerable bulge.
Billy adjusted himself with a wicked smile. “I do find you attractive, flower. Like I said, I’ve got a thing for redheads who dress like schoolmarms. Must be some Freudian shit, but I need a nanny who’s here for my little bird, not for me.”
My chin jutted out, offended by his games and ashamed of my own response to him. “I don’t think I’m suited for this position. I’ll ask the agency to send another candidate over as soon as possible.” I reached for the doorknob.
“It pays well over six figures a year, plus room, board, vacation and medical.”
My hand paused. With that kind of money I could pay off my student loans in a year and save a tidy sum. Crap. I turned slowly on my heel to face Billy, and smiled brightly. “What time do we leave tomorrow?”

New Review! Hard Lessons by Charlotte West 4 Cranky Stars

Hard Lessons (Wild Minds, #2)Hard Lessons by Charlotte West
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Cranky Stars

Hard Lessons takes us back. It's the prequel to Good Lies. Here we see the story of Billy (not idol) and Daisy and how they became a couple. We also get to see young Addy and her crazy childhood ways.

Daisy is searching for the perfect teaching position. Unfortunately she has to settle as the nanny for an out of control rockers equally out of control daughter. Daisy was raised in a strict military household and her mother passed away at a young age. While on the road she learns how to manage the Wanks and all the mess that comes with being in their life. What Daisy didn't bargain for was falling for her wild boss.

Billy basically thinks the world revolves around him. He says he probably shouldn't have ever been a father but cant imagine a life without Addy in it. He is a gypsy at heart and will never settle in one place so he drags Addy from coast to coast. He hires Daisy or as he calls her Flower and his world implodes. They are a lit match and dynamite and he loves that Daisy won't put up with his demanding ways.

Once I got past the whole not Billy Idol situation this book was good. I hated that Daisy was such a doormat at times but I believe that is just her personality. She's a helper and fixer by nature. This going back in time was done well and tied into the last book nicely. All in love I like Charlotte West work.

Facebook | Twitter | Instagram EXCERPT: He’s seated at a table in the far corner when I spot him from the door. He’s not hard to miss—not with his purple t-shirt in a sea of black and yellow, and wavy mussed hair. He’s slouching, hunched over his table. Defeated. Tired. My stomach rolls with nerves, nerves that have me rooted to the spot in the doorway, watching him. Just watching. For the entire four minutes I stand here, he sits immobile, studying his laptop, eyes moving along the screen, completely transfixed by whatever he’s reading. Learning. “Just go over there,” I whisper to myself, blowing out a puff of pent-up air. I put one foot in front of the other and begin toward him, spine ramrod straight, steeling myself, prepared for another argument. Twenty feet. Fifteen. Eight. Two. “Hi.” No reply. “Do you mind if I sit here?” I lay my hand on the back of the wooden chair across from him, intending to pull it out. He stiffens but doesn’t lift his head. “Yes I mind.” “Would you mind if I sat at the table next to you?” I’m pushing his buttons, looking for a reaction, but he only spares me a brief glance. Shrugs. “Free country.” I bite my lip to hide a smile, glad he didn’t tell me to take a hike...

New Review! Beneath the Vine by Lilian Bryant 5 Cranky Stars

Beneath the VineBeneath the Vine by Lillian Bryant
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 Cranky Stars

Selene was a cellist. She had a dream of teaching at a prestigious Los Angeles school. Determined to make her life worth something she studied and worked hard. During one performance she meets Bennett.

He's a cut throat businessman with a past. Out of he guilt he gets caught up in the wrong kind of business. He meets Selene and knows he has to have her. In comes Gage his former best friend. They share a sordid past filled with sex and lies. Gage is hiding secrets of his own. Together they come together for Selene.

This book was the right amount of steamy yet underneath it all that was just the surface. When you looked deeper it was about epic love. These two sacrificed themselves at times and you kept screaming for them to get a grip.

I admired Selene and her know what she wanted attitude. So one thing made me chuckle and it was kind of how Bennett's past reminded me of Batman minus the ninja training. He was basically opposite Batman. Gage stole my heart. I don't know what else to say. If you like drama and mystery and above all else love then please read this book!! Kudos to you Lillian Bryant!! Fingers crossed for more.

Good Lies (Wild Minds #1)Good Lies by Charlotte West
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Cranky Stars

Addison was a small child when she was sent to live with her dad. One half of the famous rock duo Wanks and Janks. He was a young guy living the rock and roll dream and probably had no business raising a child. Fast forward and Addy is a wild and out of control woman. She acts before she thinks and this has landed her in more trouble case in point in the arms of Warren Price. Sadly some problems can't be solved with just running and hiding which is her MO in life.

Warren Price is the lead singer of Wild Minds. They have so much going for them and what he didn't expect was the wild Addison to trip into his dressing room thinking she was nabbing alcohol. Warren quickly learns who her father is and suffers the consequences. He sets his eyes on Addy and invites her on their tour. It's a whirlwind affair and it leaves two hearts in ruins. Flash forward and hes back in the good graces of Billy but not so much with Addy.

Ok so was Addisons dad Billy Idol? He was a dead ringer for him it seemed. So that's all I could think about.

At times I hated Addison and her flighty ways. Warren was just all over. I did like this book I truly did. I would have liked to see some real growth between these two. All in all it was a fun read with a nice epilogue to tie up the tumultuous story of Addy and Warren.

New Review! Wrangled by Love by Barb Shuler 4 Cranky Stars

Wrangled By Love (The Cowboy Way #1)Wrangled By Love by Barb Shuler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Cranky Stars

This book was refreshing. None of the typical back and forth you see in a lot of romances now a days. It had heart and a lot of drama and one psycho you know what.

Georgie was on the road with no destination with her dog Tango. Living the life of a gypsy taking in as much as she could because hey life is short. Her journey led her to a ranch and it's here she crashes into Tate. Life is funny that way.

Tate was a good old southern boy. He helped on his families ranch and raised a beautiful daughter. He had been dealt a crappy hand at one point but the man was a text book example of perseverance. While out wrangling some wayward cattle he meets Georgie.

I liked almost every aspect of this book. The drama may have been all over and maybe should have stuck to one dramatic plot and at times I found myself getting frustrated. I'm glad I stuck it out and how it ended brought the story together.
