New Review! Angelbound by Christina Bauer, 4 Cranky Stars

Angelbound (Angelbound Origins #1)Angelbound by Christina Bauer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

**** 4 Cranky Stars ****

In a parallel world to humans, eighteen year old quasi-demon, Myla, lived with her over-protective mom in Purgatory. As well as attending high school, watching human TV channels and trying to survive teenage years under her mother’s watchful eye, Myla also had to serve their master ghoul, Walker.

Being Walker’s slave and classified as the lowest class in her world were Angels and Demons held a tentative truce, Thrax killed rogue demons who plagued the human world, and ghouls kept quasi-demons like her in check didn’t really bother Myla much as long as she can serve Walker. By “serve” meant fighting in the Purgatory Arena against damned souls who contests their sentence. If the soul win, it gets a free pass into Heaven but if fighters like Myla win, it goes straight to hell. Myla always wins and Walker makes sure she gets more than side information on how to be the best fighter in the Arena.

Her popularity however started attracting the notice of Verus, the Queen of Angels and Armageddon, the King of Demons much to her mother’s dismay who would rather Myla becomes a seamstress instead of a fighter.

Her ghoul teachers also took exception to her service and would rather she learn how to cook or bake for her master, or even darn his socks served with a grateful smile.

Then Myla came across the high prince of the Thrax and developed a love-hate relationship with Lincoln who hated all demons as it was his job to hunt them. Amidst all these, troubles came to Purgatory and Myla found herself swept right in the middle of it.

I really enjoyed reading this story. Myla’s courage and no-nonsense attitude was quite entertaining. Her banter with Linc made me laugh a few times. And her fashion disasters are enough for me to convince friends to read this book as well.

The world building was solid. There are several side characters I loved and were well-developed into the story. Walker was my favourite and I hope I’ll read more about him in the succeeding books.

There were a few scenes I felt were not necessary and made the story drag a bit. But the other parts made up for it and definitely kept my interest glued. All in all, a very entertaining read!
